The Day of Deliverance…

with 20 comments

Incase you are totally cut off from the general world and tune into ChronoTron for your daily updates ;), yesterday was Mother’s Day. And of course, yours truly totally forgot it (any surprises). Perhaps ‘Forgot’ is the wrong word to be used here. I am pretty bad when it comes to (remembering) dates (pun intended :P) unless somebody thrusts it in my face. But then, I can’t blame the n news channels (Limit n –> infinity) whose sole purpose is to sensationalize the smallest controversy that could happen in some corner of the nation while all along claiming to be true saviours of democracy nor can I blame the internet for Mother’s day not being as popular as Valentines Day or Earth hour.

The Time: 10:30, I was watching some song on TV where the “I’m-a-wannabee” sings “Everyday morning I wake up and my angel is mother”. And the very next song had the #1 superstar singing (forgive the crude translation)

There is no life which hasn’t said Ma (mother)
Without mother, there is no improvement in life

I wondered aloud whether it was the in-thing today (one can never keep up with all these media trends) to continuously play songs related a single theme and luckily for me, in came my mother and coldly said “Obviously, Today is Mother’s day” and me with the smartness of a blunt axe said, “Oh! Happy Mother’s Day” and my mom just walked away without commenting.

*sigh. That was yet another [Insert Special Tag] Day that I’ve blown. I know I kinda upset my mom with my insensitivity but the fact is that I’ve never found these [Special] Days so catchy or impressing in the first place. Heck, leave alone mother’s day, my hate list includes all such days – fathers day, uncles day, aunties day, grandparents day, global day, green day, pet doggie day, punk day, good day/bad day?? And how can I forget “Valentines Day!”. I’ve always felt that one doesn’t need a special day to express one’s love towards a particular person/thing. The concept of all these days has always been skewed. Should one express love towards his/her mother ONLY on mother’s day? Is the obvious inference, we don’t love our mothers on all other days. Then what’s the use of branding one random day as “{ABC} day” and hyping it everywhere and hurting the feelings of millions because nincompoops like me fail to realize that it’s D-Day.

Looking at the rate we are moving and thinking about the fact there are only 365 days in a year (okay 366 if you insist , but isn’t Feb 28 Intl Leap Year day or something :P), its quite obvious that we’ll exhaust all days of the year by branding it “[Insert Special Tag] Day” and what a poor reason to pick a poor man’s pocket every single day of the year. And coming to the obvious “Valentines Day”. I have to admit, this is the best marketing gimmick every invented by mankind. The various salesman who bug us today could use such brilliant ideas to market their products. Valentines day is the most over-hyped concept every known to man….. How many ‘lovers’ have broken up just because the boyfriend forgot wish her or because the gift wasn’t expensive enough. Again the same question arises, Can’t I give the gift/rose/wateva on any other day? Should I express my undying love ONLY on Febraury 14th? Questions I doubt even god can answer. The shops have amazing sales on Feb 14 and the cards, the roses and the valentines get sold out like hot cakes. This is the “boom day” for all shopkeepers, park owners, people who sell stuff at beaches, coffee days, Mcdonalds, etc. Thereby I propose that Feb 14th should be called “International #1 Sales Day”. What say you? And if I do get myself a girlfriend, I’ll make it a point that (just to break the stereotype), I’ll not give her a gift on that day nor will I accept one. (All you wannabee girlfriends trying to impress me, take note! :D)

“WE DON’T NEED NO SPECIAL DAY TO EXPRESS LOVE!” and I hope that the message has reached the readers of my blog!

Into that heaven of freedom, let my country awake. – Tagore

I know you won’t be reading this mom… but still “Happy Mother’s day”.

  10. Firstly, nice post shreyas πŸ™‚

    Facts:
    1. February 14th is Valentines Day. EXACTLY 9 months later, comes Children’s Day on November 14th. If that isn’t a coincidence, then i don’t know what is. [Fact courtesy: Satti]

    2. On Headlines Today, there was a half an hour show on how condom sales experienced a boom on the week before Valentines Day. Marketing gimmick indeed.

    3. Shreyas doesn’t have a girlfriend yet, only because he still hasn’t unleashed his six-pack abs. Wait for that, and there’ll be ladies queuing in line to meet him (or are they already doing that?) πŸ˜€

PS: Pls edit/delete this comment if you feel it is derogatory to anyone’s sentiments (especially fact #3) πŸ˜€

  16. @anonymous : That is in the case of numbers. The statement “WE DON’T NEED NO SPECIAL DAY TO EXPRESS LOVE!” may not imply that we don’t need a special day to express our love (and only to complete idiots of course) but it NEVER implied that we do need a special day to express our love. Think out of the box mate πŸ˜› πŸ˜› πŸ˜›
